The most common symptom of being constipated is having hard stools which are painful and difficult to pass when having a bowel movement. While straining or pushing to pass a stool may not seem to be a big deal, this activity can lead to more serious problem. Conditions such as hemorrhoids and anal fissures can result, can cause even further pain. Also, in more severe stages of chronic constipation, the abdomen can even become distended.
Another symptom of constipation is infrequent bowel movements. If you find that you're only going to the bathroom 3 times a week or less, there is a problem.
Individuals who are constipated also experience a sensation of incompete bowel evacuation and bloating. Even after going to the bathroom, one still has the feeling as if there is more to come when constipation is an issue. This is due to the fact that waste is not being efficiently evacuated.
In extreme cases where fecal impaction takes place, vomiting can occur as the body reacts from being unable to eliminate waste.
